Glimpse into the future

My neighbo(u)rhood is an average American suburban neighbo(u)rhood. It might be a little nicer than average because it’s reasonably affluent and the houses are old enough to have been built before the “let’s build massive houses on teeny tiny lots and sell them to young families” craze that seems to have taken over suburbs that still have undeveloped areas.
There’ s a house being built on a corner, and I gave it a long look as I walked by yesterday afternoon. I tend to spend a lot of time looking at houses around here because most of them are so very nice. I look at architectural styles, roof types, windows, gates, garden arrangements, doors, and so on.
It occured to me as I walked yesterday that if I ever think about owning a house (if that ever happens), I might be interested in getting one built. (Many young professionals do this. It’s a little weird, but I got used to the idea.) By the time I can think along these lines (again, not soon) it’ll probably be possible to make all these decisions on a computer. “I want that roof, those windows, that room configuration, that kitchen, etc.” Perhaps this already happens; I don’t know ’cause I’ve never looked into it. I can put together a car on the web; why not a house?
Kinda nifty.
