There are definitely moments when I think perhaps I’m living in an extended dream or a film because the realities I see around me are simply too crazy for my small mind to accept. These are my personal moments of cognative dissonance, and it’s giving me a headache. The latest headache is in regards to the security funding to New York City that got slashed by 40% this year in the annual decision of how vulnerable different places are (and therefore how much money to give them for Homeland Security). It has fewer assets, national landmarks, and monuments than other cities, it was decided. And they filed the application wrong.
As always, Neil has the best responses to the most staggering idiocies. He points out that there was once a National Landmark in New York, but some people flew a couple planes into it.

[...] I mentioned recently that I often question reality, or what I define as reality. Last weekend, a plan to forge some semblance of peace (they call it “reconciliation,” I think) in Iraq was unveiled. I like plans for reconciliation. From the very superficial reading I’ve done, it looks like this one might not suck. One of the provisions would actually grant amnesty to some Iraqis who’ve killed American soldiers. (I heard this and thought, “Well, that’s only fair…I’m sure the vast majority of American soldiers who’ve killed Iraqis aren’t going to be charged for it.”) [...]
