The wonder of infrastructure

Giant excavations are amazingly cool. I guess everyone knows this already, but I would like to remind you by showing you these photos of underground flood tunnels in Japan. You could totally film large sections of Akira, the Movie in those tunnels. In fact, it makes the vision of the tunnels all the more realistic. I guess in the context of being in Tokyo, massive, subterranean military-industrial complexes are entirely reasonable.
There are more cool explorations of the crust of mother earth in other cities.
City Tunnel No.3 is an example of the sort of planning that boggles my mind. Admittedly the problem in the 1970′s delayed it, but it will have consumed the life’s work of three generations of diggers.
Yes yes, it’s late, over-budget and so on, but you have to be impressed with the results – building and living beneath thousands of millions of tons of rock, earth and city. I makes me think that the wonders of the moderns world are hidden deep below, which should not mean that their achievement is out of sight.

Those pictures from the Japanese tunnel system are incredible – they really do look like a scifi set.
