Pillar of Conservatism the Wall Street Journal says “I don’t want to alarm anybody, but maybe it’s time for Americans to start stockpiling food. No, this is not a drill” - should we take heed? Normally I would say ‘probably not, aren’t vast tracts of the EU held artificially fallow by the set-aside policy?’ - except a little digging reveals that in fact, no:
I did not know this; set-aside was effectively suspended last year - and when Japan is still having problems getting basic foods for its citizens now, a little red light goes off in my head. I’ve been to Japan, they’re ahead of us on the tech curve, if they can’t weather supply problems, we could be in trouble maybe we should pay attention.

Japan aren’t *that* far ahead, if at all.
It’s worth remembering that they have complicating factors of eating rice, 11% arable land and some of the highest population densities in the world.
Nonetheless, it’s time to ditch the CAP and the US Agricultural subsidy and create a chance for the land to be used properly.

I’ve heard that one of the big wholesale retailers in the US has begun rationing sale of large units of rice (as opposed to normal sized boxes of rice sold in ordinary consumer stores) per family to protect supply. I’m guessing this must be what Wall Street is reacting to.
