California is stereotyped as super-liberal, the home of the granola-crunching, tree-hugging hippies, and a generally safe place for people with alternate lifestyles, beliefs, and viewpoints.
I’ve done a little work trying to dispel the myth, explaining where it comes from (yes, California’s major cities are pretty hippy but there are a lot of wide open spaces populated with very scary people) and why the most accurate stereotypes of the state are the ones dealing with the weather and natural disasters. My latest twig of information to toss on this bonfire: Local car dealer makes an ad that tells atheists to sit down and shut up.
For a group of people who whine so much about being persecuted, they sure do engage in a fair amount of persecution.

Kind of funny for him to have such weak denials. I wonder are they cookie-cutter adverts?
