I read a letter to one of the news papers recently that went along the lines of “so, can we expect all the people who marched against war in Iraq to hit the streets in protest against the war in Georgia?”

And if not, why not?

    1) The ethnic issue: there are people who align themselves with both countries in South Ossetia.
    2) The political issue: it’s a much grayer area, especially since the Russians are alleging genocide.
    3) The alignment issue: the principal reason that people in Europe objected to the Iraq war was that it was their “side” doing it. Russia isn’t an ally.
    4) The value isse: if you thought that Blair and Bush were deaf, Putin and Saakashvili doubly so.

I think Uber’s point 4 hits the nail firmly on the head. Objecting to your own people or your friends, allies etc starting a war is one thing, but objecting to a near-dictatorship who’s never particularly liked you starting one is even more of a pointless gesture.

It’s a lot trendier to hate on America than it is to protest Russia or a small central Asian country.
