Bill Gates’s Last Day

Bill Gates is retiring from Microsoft soon, and this is the last Consumer Electronics Show he will be MS Chief at. He’s long had a reputation for doing some cool videos, and it’s nice to see one that has actually come out and been visible to the world:

Spreadshirt

I am very impressed with the great response from the Spreadshirt people. I will be getting back in touch with them this week to try and figure out how to fix the problem. I have a sneaking suspicious that the difficulty lies in the way I have designed the logo, which uses a textured brush that fades away.

As warned, I have not shipped out that salt, so uber’s box of kosher salt is first on the list. If there are any Irish knitters still reading who want wool from KnitPicks or other places that can’t or won’t ship outside of the US (or will but charge ridiculous prices), get in touch and I will see what I can do.

Festival of World Food

Marlay Park, Saturday and Sunday, October 6th and 7th

Come and visit this magnificent festival, a must for anyone vaguely interested in food, health, and gourmet experiences.

There will be over 40 vendors, representing countries such as Japan, Spain, Algeria, Thailand, Ireland, Germany, Hungary, France, Italy, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Lebanon, Palestine, and many many others. There will be butchers, bakers, farmers, gluten-free options, farmhouse ice-cream, farmhouse cheese, and environmentally friendly stalls.

An event for all the family; bring your children to the ‘decorate your own cupcake’ stall, or to the origami workshop, or the the National Childrens Hospital fund raiser, where kids pay to play a game and can win prizes.

Get your own hands involved in the on-going sushi making workshop where you can make a sushi roll, and bring it home. There will be free cookery demonstrations throughout both days, to include pasta making, sausage making, Thai, Caribbean, and vegan.

On Saturday afternoon, witness a Mayan earth oven demonstration, with cochinita pibil – pork wrapped in banana leaves – cooked on hot stones in the earth. There will be a demonstration of maize tortilla making also. We’ll have live South American music to accompany this cultural event.

On Sunday afternoon, come and participate in a real hoe down. There will be a pig roast, served along side corn on the cob, baked potatoes, with live Bluegrass music to transport you to another continent.

There is a designated arts and crafts area, where you can buy jewellery, books, plants, clothing, and many other interesting things.

Come hungry, and bring your shopping list. This will be a shopping experience like no other.

Triumphant Return

We have successfully returned to our cold, wet, cloudy, foggy island. I am jet-lagged, so a more detailed entry will come eventually. Since most of the ‘Coven were actually in LA last week, I am hopeful that I will not have to build this Ark on my own.

In the interim, I have one super-important thing to link.

That’s a lotta days

It’s fun to think about age in terms of recreational mathematics. One friend turned 31 recently, and while he was musing on age and birthdays I nearly fell over myself realising (and telling him) “But 31 is a happy prime! You don’t get to be that again for another 48 years!”

Today I listened to “Wings for Marie” for the first time in a few months (it makes me think of too many things at once, and is therefore not usually suitable for work) and it dawned on me that I’ve been alive for about 10,000 days. (Okay, just a hair under 10K. You can find out how many days old you are here. I can celebrate 10,000 days on…um…27 October. Early Halloween party?) I believe this is what I will say if someone asks me how old I am, at least for a little while.

Nah it’s Crap

I have a number of things I should be doing, almost all of them are important and interesting or fun. However, I recently got a Nokia N95, and I am trying to decide what ringtones to apply. I started out with Fire by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, but now I have I Ke Barra. I’m still trying to work out what sms tone to get, I used to have the transition from the Transformers Cartoon, but that’s no good with the film coming out*. Instead, I was hoping to get Dom Joly, but the quality isn’t there so far.

Any suggestions? I can take pretty much any format, but high quality stereo is important.

*Yeah, I suffer from an allergy to Cool-Aid as well, or at least I like to think I do. Does that make me a hipster or just a plain idiot?

Traveller deep breath

How could I have missed this? For someone who is permanently connected to the Internet, I missed the fact that there is a 30^th Anniversary edition of Traveller coming out: T5! back to the hexadecimal marvel!

I am really excited about this – it’s sad to say since I think I might be the only person in Gamers who is interested in Traveller, but still! Woo! T5!
